Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery to correct problems of drooping eyelids that give an aged appearance and tired face.
A Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure whereby the eyelids and surrounding areas of skin are rejuvenated. With the passage of time there are three major changes which take place in the skin surrounding the eyes:
- The eyelid gradually loses its elastic properties and is subject to the effects of gravity.
- The muscle surrounding the eyes becomes gradually looser.
- A moderate amount of fat begins to accumulate in the upper and lower eyelid areas.
The overall result is the appearance of loose skin and “bagginess” in the eyelids and soft tissues surrounding the eyelid regions. An eyelid lift (otherwise known as a blepharoplasty) addresses all three of the factors surgically; and the result is a more youthful looking appearance.
The surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids only, on the lower eyelids only, or on all four eyelids simultaneously; and can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s needs and preferences. During the surgery, which is typically performed on an out-patient basis, the redundant skin is resected, the underlying muscle is tightened, and any excess fatty tissue is removed. The result is a more youthful overall appearance.
Typical candidates include adults of good health, who have noticed a loosening of the skin in the areas of the eyelids, and who wish to re-establish a more youthful looking appearance to this area.
